August 2023 Strait Shores Creative Update

It’s been three months since we launched Strait Shores Creative. Here’s an update:

We spent most of the month connecting with other entrepreneurs in Strait Shores and Cumberland in Nova Scotia. However our first stop this month was Maritime Crafts and More in Shediac.

This lovely shop was much larger than we anticipated! It houses an impressive variety of local arts and crafts from dozens, maybe hundreds of makers.

A few days later, we found ourselves in Northport, Nova Scotia connecting with Northport Fishing Charters. Our whole family had a great time on the water for our first ever fishing trip. Northport Fishing Charters is our feature business for the month of August. We highly recommend this experience; guide Justin Macdonald is very knowledgeable and did a great job customizing the experience for us. We can’t wait to go back!

We finished our fishing trip by stopping at The Scoop Shack just down the road, this is another new business that opened this year and was our video business feature last month. It seems we can’t leave Nova Scotia without ice cream now!

The middle of the month was spent preparing our natural and art products for sale. We planned to have goods at the Port Elgin Farmer’s Market for the month of August and wanted to make sure we were stocked up. You will see our table onsite for the rest of the month alongside many other local makers and producers, it’s worth a visit to see what is new each week.

Speaking of natural products, we had the chance to visit Bee N’ Blossom onsite in Amherst, Nova Scotia. You might be familiar with them if you have been to the Sackville Farmer’s Market, we had no idea they have their own retail location! Owner Pamela Ibbitson has so much knowledge to share and an incredible variety of luxurious natural products including an entire skin care line.

Our last visit of the month was to the beautiful Lavender Moon Farm just a few minutes down the road from Port Elgin. We caught them on the last day before harvest when the lavender was in full bloom. We clipped our own fresh bouquet and grabbed some dried lavender to include in our own natural products. We can’t wait to use it in our fall creations!

As you can see it has been a very busy month! We are looking forward to slowing down in August and digesting some of the information and feedback we have received. Many thanks to the local entrepreneurs we have met, it’s been very inspiring for us! Especially because many of the businesses we have connected with recently are new like us. The idea of “support local” becomes quite different when you realize that behind every small business is a family of real people making a living and contributing to the community.

If you have a small business you’d like to share with us, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to connect. Enjoy August everyone!

Sincerely,

Cheyenne and Justin
